Voice 9 International Desk: A shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy, has claimed the lives of a total of 41 migrants. On Wednesday, the shipwreck survivors confirmed the fatalities to local media. One of the riskiest migration routes in the world is the crossing of the Mediterranean. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that since 2014, about 28,000 individuals have gone missing while attempting to cross the sea.
After two shipwrecks off the coast of Lampedusa on
Sunday, 30 migrants were reported missing, and 57 others were
wounded. The search and rescue efforts to find the missing persons are still
underway.

A group of four survivors from the shipwreck said that, out
of everyone on board, 41 people drowned when their boat sank while traveling to
Italy.
The migrants were headed to Italy and had started their trek in Sfax, Tunisia. More than 1,800 individuals have perished in maritime accidents from North Africa to Europe as of August 2023.
