Sangbad Voice 9, International Desk: NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore returned to Earth after an unexpected extended stay at the International Space Station (ISS). Her return journey culminated in a successful splashdown off the Florida coast on a SpaceX crew, marking the end of the nine-month saga.
Along with other astronauts, Nick Hague and Alexander Golbunov, Williams and Wilmore left the ISS a day earlier, once again being autonomously navigated by Dragon Freedom. The spacecraft was exposed to extreme temperatures
above 1,650°C (3,000°F) before using parachutes and gently landing in the Atlantic Ocean.
Williams and Wilmore were released on June 5th,
when they boarded Boeing Starliner for a short test mission. NASA ultimately decides to bring Starliner back
to Earth and assign the astronaut to the SpaceX Crew Dragon. Further schedule delays have
extended returns to March.
With Sunday's replacement, NASA accelerated its departure to avoid worsening
weather conditions. After the
splashdown, the repair team quickly ensured the dragon's freedom and conducted a medical review of the crew
before placing it from the capsule.
