International Desk: The southern suburbs of Beirut endured a relentless barrage from Israeli airstrikes overnight into Sunday, marking the most ferocious onslaught the Lebanese capital has witnessed since Israel escalated its military campaign against the Iran-aligned Hezbollah last month.
Throughout
the night, the city reverberated with thunderous explosions, illuminating the
sky with vivid flashes of crimson and ivory, visible from several kilometers
away for nearly half an hour. This assault stands as the most significant
strike in Israel's ongoing offensive against Beirut, as reported by both
eyewitnesses and military analysts on local television.
As
dawn broke, a pallid haze enveloped the city, debris littered the streets of
the southern suburbs, and plumes of smoke ascended ominously into the
atmosphere. "Last night was the most violent of all the previous nights.
Buildings were trembling around us, and at first, I thought it was an
earthquake. There were countless strikes—we couldn't tally them all—and the
cacophony was overwhelming," recounted Hanan Abdullah, a resident of the
Burj al-Barajneh district in Beirut's southern suburbs.
