tragically lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries following a
brazen assault by gunmen at a roadside vendor in the heart of a
cartel-dominated region in north-central Mexico. Authorities disclosed this
grim news on Sunday.
In the beleaguered state of Guanajuato, notorious for its cartel
violence, prosecutors reported that the incident transpired late Saturday
evening in a bustling commercial district teeming with food stalls and
refreshment kiosks in the town of Apaseo el Grande.
The fatalities included eight men who were gunned down mere steps
from a stand renowned for its traditional milk-based confectionery. Among the
injured were a man and a woman, though their current medical status remains
unreported.
In a harrowing twist, officials confirmed that two firefighters
were among the deceased, with local media indicating that a paramedic also fell
victim to the onslaught. The state’s ambulance and paramedic service
acknowledged the loss of an emergency medical technician late Saturday, yet it
has not been verified whether he was one of the casualties from this violent
episode.
Disturbing footage circulating on social media depicted the
lifeless bodies of men, some exhibiting apparent head wounds, strewn across the
pavement beside motorcycles parked in proximity to the stand.
Gang-related hostilities persist unabated, even after the
inauguration of Mexico's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, on October 1.
Sheinbaum has dismissed the notion of waging war against the cartels, opting
instead for a strategy predicated on intelligence gathering aimed at
undermining their operational efficacy.
Moreover, she intends to continue the policies of her predecessor,
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, which focus on addressing the root causes of crime
through enhanced social investment and preventative measures.
