Mumbai Police Bust Fake Call Centres Targeting US Citizens, 9 Arrested

Sangbad Voice 9, News Desk: Mumbai Police have cracked down on two fake call centres in Andheri (East), arresting nine people accused of scamming US citizens. The suspects allegedly pretended to be officials from a popular online shopping platform and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), pressuring victims to pay fake penalties.

The accused reportedly accessed personal data of foreign nationals without consent and used VoIP and other online tools to call and threaten victims. Police seized 11 laptops, 18 mobile phones, 11 headphones, routers, switches, and related documents, worth around ₹4.72 lakh.

Officials said the scammers used scripted conversations and fake identities to intimidate victims, claiming their bank accounts or packages were under investigation. The case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the Information Technology Act 2000, and the Telecommunications Act 2023. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the racket.
