Voice 9, Dhaka Bureau: Three people were killed in a clash between two groups over a dispute over the sale of jackfruit at a mosque in Sunamganj upazila, Bangladesh. At least 30 people were injured. The incident took place at Hasnabad village in Joykals Union around 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Nurul Haque, 45,
son of Abdul Latif; Babul Mia, 50, son of Abdus Sufi; and Shahjahan Mia, 55,
son of Abdul Basir. According to eyewitnesses, there was an argument and
scuffle between the people of Saraimral and Maladar groups over the jackfruit
auction at the village mosque on Sunday afternoon.
The incident led to another clash between the
two groups on Monday morning. During this time, people from both sides engaged
in a bloody clash with local and sharp weapons. Nurul Haque and Babul Mia were
killed on the spot. Later, another person named Shahjahan Mia of Maladar Group
died while undergoing treatment at Kaitak Hospital. According to locals, there
was already a dispute between these two groups over land.
Khaled Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of
Shantiganj Police Station, said the situation was tense in the area after the
incident. Police have been deployed at the spot to control the law-and-order situation.
