Suicide of a Maharashtra lecturer blamed on faculty harassment


Voice 9, Nagpur: A 42-year-old lecturer at Nagpur's GS College of Commerce allegedly committed suicide at his home and left behind a 14-page note in which he reportedly claimed harassment by some members of the teaching faculty.

 Beltarodi police station confirmed that the diary containing Karade's writings had been handed over to the police by family members. The diary has writings spanning 14 pages and contains names of some people and other details, he said.

Gajanan Janraoji Karade, a Narendra Nagar resident, was a Hindi teacher who has been teaching students in Classes 11 and 12 for the last 12 years, according to the police. The lecturer's wife and his brother-in-law's wife were in Amravati at the time, attending a relative's wedding. Both hurried to Nagpur, where they saw Karade hanging from a ceiling fan, according to authorities.

They said he hung himself with a saree attached to a ceiling fan at his home on Sunday evening when his wife was gone in Amravati.

According to relatives, Karade had been stressed in recent days and regularly complained about harassment from members of the college administration and some lecturers.

They said, Karade called his brother-in-law on Sunday evening and expressed concern that he may be attacked by unidentified individuals. According to the family, Karade told his brother-in-law that he had written everything in a journal kept in the refrigerator and urged him to take action if something happened to him
