West Bengal House Party gang rape case: police custody for 3 accused colleagues

Voice 9, Kolkata Bureau: Three people working in the field of technology have been accused of participating in a gang rape of a colleague at a social gathering in Kolkata. They have been remanded to police custody for a period of four days. The survivor has alleged that her drink was tampered with and she was coerced into engaging in a sexual act by the host, who was accompanied by two others. The accused individuals maintain their innocence, claiming that the act was consensual.

The woman has undergone a medical examination, and her statement will be recorded before a magistrate today.  On Sunday, a court in Barasat ordered the three tech professionals to be held in police custody for four days following their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a colleague during a house party on Friday. The state counsel described the incident as a violation of trust and a heinous crime against a woman who had placed her trust in her colleagues and had joined them for a social gathering.

The survivor, who is 28 years old, filed a police complaint on Saturday, asserting that her drink had been spiked and she had been forced into a sexual act by the host in the presence of two others. The lawyer representing the accused, Rajaram Chatterjee, stated, "My clients are innocent. The woman was in a relationship with the man, and they had engaged in a physical relationship previously as well. Even on Friday, whatever transpired between them was consensual. However, she filed a complaint, and my client was arrested." Chatterjee had requested bail for his clients.

The woman underwent a medical examination, and her statement will be recorded before a magistrate on Monday. "She had attended parties at the flat before. Therefore, on Friday, she went without any hesitation. However, she claims that her drink was spiked and she was forced into a sexual act. According to the law, even if the two individuals had engaged in a physical relationship before if the woman does not give consent to a sexual act at any point and is coerced into it, it is considered a crime," stated the officer.
