Voice 9, New Delhi Bureau: During British rule, the majority of the freedom fighters exiled to the Andaman Cellular Jail were Bengalis. According to a report in the state assembly, out of the total 398 exiles, 398 were from Bengal, 95 from Punjab, 17 from Bihar, 18 from Uttar Pradesh, 3 from Maharashtra, 14 from Kerala, 8 from Andhra Pradesh, and 5 from Odisha. Therefore, it is evident that Bengalis played a significant role in India's struggle for independence. This illustration undoubtedly signifies the proud position of Bengalis.

The West Bengal government tried to gather unknown information associated with Bengal’s role in India’s freedom struggle from the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and display it in the Alipore Museum. “Eighty percent of the people who were incarcerated in cellular jail by the British during India’s freedom movement were from Bengal. The stories of many of them are unknown.
