Kolkata Bureau: Student organizations have initiated a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally,
marching towards the West Bengal state secretariat today, August 27, to
peacefully demonstrate against the RG Kar incident. The Trinamool Congress has
raised concerns that the rally could lead to violence, while the Kolkata Police
has labeled it as ‘illegal,’ with the government issuing prohibitory orders in
the Nabanna area.
The students are calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
over the mishandling of the RG Kar incident, where a trainee doctor was
brutally assaulted and killed while on duty.
Additionally, the students have been assured that their march will not disrupt
UGC-NET exams, which will be conducted in two shifts. Despite these assurances,
some educational institutions have opted for online classes on Tuesday or
declared a holiday.
In parallel, the Central Bureau of Investigation has completed two rounds of
polygraph tests on former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, with lie detection
tests also conducted on the main suspect, Sanjoy Roy.
The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI a three-week deadline to provide a
progress report on the investigation into RG Kar Hospital and its financial
irregularities, to be submitted by September 17.
