First consignment of uranium from nuclear plant arrives in Bangladesh

Voice 9, Dhaka Bureau:   The initial shipment of fresh nuclear fuel, specifically uranium, for the inaugural unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has arrived in Bangladesh. The uranium consignment was transported from Russia and reached Dhaka on Thursday evening.
The construction work for the generation of 2,400 MW of electricity through two nuclear power units in Ishwardi is nearing completion. The comprehensive project is expected to be launched punctually. The fuel for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is manufactured at Russia's uranium production facility.
Adhering to all international regulations, the first batch of uranium will be delivered to the Rooppur project area in Bangladesh between the end of September and early October. Formal handover of the fuel to the project authorities at the Rooppur project site will take place on October 5. Alexei Likhachev, the director general of Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom), will personally oversee the fuel handover.
The fuel is being produced in Ruppur by Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant (NCCP), a subsidiary of Rosatom's energy manufacturer Tevel. A special aircraft has transported the fuel from the Russian factory to Shahjalal Airport in Dhaka.
Subsequently, it will be transported to the project site in Rooppur, Ishwardi, Pabna, via road. Law enforcement agencies, including the army, will be responsible for ensuring the secure transportation of the uranium.
