Raya Gupta, Voice 9, North-East: Sikkim is ravaged by rains and flash floods. Bengal-Sikkim has seen the terrible form of the apparently calm Teesta. Village after village was washed away. The army camp was also swept away. Local residents have been evacuated from the Teesta side. Yet many are desperate to save their straw from being swallowed by the demonic river.
In the morning, the bodies of three people were seen floating in the Teesta. But the bodies and cars were washed away as the local people were too busy trying to pick up the other things that were floating away from the river. A lot of people in Sikkim go to visit Puja. In that case, many tourists are likely to stay there.
A red alert is issued for the bell. According to the army, the water level in Teesta may rise up to 25 feet. Everything has been washed away in the village. The body started floating. So far, it is not possible to know how many people have died.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for Sikkim and orange alerts for Assam and Meghalaya for the upcoming 48 hours due to the potential flooding from the Teesta River in Sikkim.
As areas of the state were
battered by intense rain and thunderstorms, Sikkim's Teesta River surged to an
all-time high, causing huge havoc from landslides and flooding. Approximately
25 army vehicles, a portion of ATTC College, and a small number of soldiers
have been lost in the disaster that followed. It is important to note that the
Education Department also made the decision to close all government-run schools
until October 8.
According to army sources, n trace of 23 soldiers has been found so far. Bodies started floating in the Teesta. Rescue work is in full swing. According to administration sources, four teams of the NDRF are working on rescue operations in Sikkim. Another team is ready if needed. A team of the Third Disaster Management Office is working in Rongpo. There are 20–25 jawans in it. The second team is trying to get to Rongpo. This team will be lost due to a lack of road connectivity.
Another team of the NDRF is also
on rescue operations in Sikkim. The fourth team went on a rescue mission to
Ghazaldoba. According to the district administration, the NDRF team arrived
after receiving information about the floating of two bodies and a car.
Five teams of the NDRF will go
to North Sikkim by helicopter. They are ready. They will leave only if the
weather improves a little.
