9, National Desk: On Thursday, a tragic incident occurred in Punjab's
Kapurthala district, resulting in the death of a police constable and injuries
to two others.
According
to officials, a group of 'Nihangs' unleashed gunfire at the policemen while
they were attempting to apprehend them in Sultanpur Lodhi. These Nihangs, who
are Sikhs armed with traditional weapons, were being pursued due to a case
registered against them. Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Tejbir Singh
Hundal informed PTI that the policemen were standing on the road when the
Nihangs initiated the attack. Regrettably, one constable lost his life, while
two other personnel sustained injuries.
Senior officials have rushed to the site and
police personnel in large numbers have been deployed in the area, they said.
Nihangs, also known as
Nihang Singhs, were initially referred to as Akalis or Akali Nihangs. They hold
the esteemed title of being the Guru's knights or the Guru's beloved, and their
inception is closely linked to the establishment of the 'Khalsa Panth' by the
10th Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh. These individuals are perpetually equipped with
an array of weaponry and are often seen riding horses while carrying an
assortment of arms, including swords, daggers, spears, rifles, shotguns, and
pistols.
