Voice 9, Delhi Bureau: After the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated the US’s position on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Jean-Pierre urged New Delhi to actively support international endeavors for a peaceful resolution in the war-torn nation, leveraging its longstanding rapport with Moscow to persuade President Putin to halt the conflict.
Highlighting the significance of collective support for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine, Jean-Pierre emphasized the pivotal role that all allies, including India, must play in fostering stability in the region.
Moreover, the White House Secretary underscored India's strategic partnership with the US, characterized by candid dialogues that encompass their interactions with Russia. Stressing the need for global cooperation, Jean-Pierre articulated the criticality of all nations, India included, in advancing efforts towards establishing a lasting and equitable peace in Ukraine.
Jean-Pierre emphasized that the responsibility to cease the conflict lies solely with President Putin, the instigator of the war. He asserted that India's diplomatic ties with Russia uniquely position it to encourage President Putin to initiate peace talks and terminate the ongoing hostilities.
The White House's statements followed PM Modi's informal meeting with Putin at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence, where discussions centered on enhancing bilateral relations between Moscow and New Delhi. The leaders also delved into the Ukrainian crisis during comprehensive talks held the following day.
PM Modi and Putin's frequent interactions, totaling 16 meetings in the past decade, underscore the depth of their engagement. PM Modi, upon his arrival in Moscow, expressed eagerness to further strengthen the "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" between India and Russia. In a social media post, PM Modi articulated his anticipation for bolstering cooperation in cutting-edge areas, emphasizing the mutual benefits that enhanced ties between the two nations would yield.
