Schoolboy killed after being hit by excavator in Kolkata

Voice 9, Kolkata Bureau:  A tragic incident unfolded in the Bansdroni locality of south Kolkata on Wednesday morning, claiming the life of a class 9 student who was reportedly struck by an excavator, as per police accounts.

The young boy was en route to his tuition classes when the calamity transpired in proximity to the Dinesh Nagar auto stand. Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, as locals rushed him to Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge, where medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.

In the aftermath of this devastating event, a wave of indignation surged through the community, with residents staging protests. They attributed the accident to the abysmal state of the roadway, which has languished in disrepair for an extended period. Furthermore, there were grievances regarding the tardiness of police response following the incident.

In a display of frustration, some individuals resorted to vandalizing the excavator implicated in the tragedy. Anita Kar Majumder, the councillor for Kolkata Municipal Corporation's ward 113, addressed the situation, clarifying that road repair initiatives were underway in the area, necessitated by prior underground drainage work. She noted that the boy was struck by the excavator's rear arm, underscoring the severity of the incident.
