Voice 9, Dhaka Bureau: A Sylhet court has sentenced a
woman to life imprisonment for killing her one-and-a-half-month-old baby with
poison. In addition, she received a Tk 20,000 fine and six months in
jail. On Monday afternoon, Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Md. Akhter
Hossain issued the directive.
Sumona Akter Surma, 35, has been identified as
the offender. She is Taj Uddin's wife from the Kanaighat upazila village of
Barachatul. When the verdict was announced in court, he was
present. Nadeem Ahmed, a one-and-a-half-month-old baby of Saudi Arabian
expatriate Nazrul Islam of Barachatul village in Kanaighat upazila, was
assassinated on December 23, 2017, it was revealed. Sumona Akter was
responsible. She is the aunt of Nadeem.
Sumona Akter committed the murder out of
jealousy toward her husband. After the incident, Nazrul Islam's wife filed a
murder case against Sumona. Sumona fled after the incident. Later, on January
28, 2018, she was arrested in the Kadamtali Bus Terminal area of South Surma in
Sylhet.
