Bureau: The inauguration of Bangladesh's
first elevated expressway was officiated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The
Farmgate section, located in the capital, was inaugurated at 3:30 p.m. on
Saturday, with the Prime Minister buying a ticket through the Kawla section to
enter the expressway. The Prime Minister is scheduled to address a rally at the
Agargaon Trade Fair playground after traveling along the expressway. The
opening ceremony commenced at 2:15 p.m. with a cultural program, and Awami
League leaders and activists began arriving at the old trade fair grounds in
the morning.
As the day progressed, crowds gathered on the
grounds to witness the inauguration. Although the Prime Minister inaugurated
the flyover on Saturday, it will only be open for vehicular movement on Sunday.
Once operational, passengers will be able to travel from Kaola at the airport
to Farmgate in just 10 minutes.
The Dhaka Elevated Expressway PPP project was
initiated in 2011, with official construction commencing on December 1, 2020.
While the project is not yet complete, the Farmgate section is being opened for
public use. The project is expected to be completed on June 30, 2024, and spans
a length of 19.73 km. The expressway will pass through Tejgaon, Moghbazar, and
Kamalapur and end at Kutubkhali on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway near Jatrabari.
The flyover comprises a total of 31 ramps, spanning 27 kilometers for
up-and-down travel. The total length of the elevated expressway, including the ramp,
is 46.73 km.
