Voice 9, International Desk: On Monday, President Joe Biden made a
statement regarding the unfortunate loss of 11 American lives and the potential
hostage situation involving other individuals at the hands of the Palestinian
militant group Hamas.
The attack on Israel, described
by a US official as displaying "ISIS-level savagery," has raised
concerns about the possibility of a larger regional conflict. The White House
clarified that there are no plans to deploy US troops but issued a warning to
Iran and other actors against involvement.
President Biden, along with the
leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and Britain, expressed their support for
Israel's right to defend itself as the death toll in the country reached 800.
In Gaza, the number of casualties stands at 687. Hamas has taken approximately
150 hostages during their recent assault on southern Israel from Gaza.
They have threatened to harm
these hostages if Israeli air strikes, which they claim are targeting Gaza
residents without warning, continue. President Biden stated that the United
States, demonstrating its support, is collaborating with Israel on efforts to
recover the hostages. In a statement following a meeting with his national
security team at the White House, he expressed his sorrow over the loss of
American citizens, many of whom had established a second home in Israel.
While confirmation is still pending,
it is believed that American citizens may be among those held by Hamas. To
demonstrate unwavering support, the White House will illuminate the blue and
white colors of the Israeli flag on Monday night. President Biden is scheduled
to deliver further remarks on the "terrorist attacks in Israel" on
Tuesday.
A senior US defense official
revealed on Monday that intense discussions are taking place between the US
government and Israeli counterparts regarding the situation of the hostages
held by Hamas in Gaza. The official likened Hamas' attacks to the notorious
brutality of the Islamic State.
