Violence claimed 232 lives following Hasina's resignation

Voice 9, International Desk: Sheikh Hasina's resignation as the prime minister triggered widespread violence and turmoil throughout Bangladesh, leading to a staggering toll of 232 casualties in various altercations and confrontations over the recent three-day period. This data stems from a detailed exposé released by the esteemed daily Prothom Alo earlier this week. The grim statistics reveal a peak in fatalities on Tuesday, with some unfortunate souls succumbing to their injuries while receiving medical care.

The nation had already been reeling from the aftermath of the quota and anti-discrimination student movements that transpired between July 16 and August 4, resulting in a harrowing count of 328 lives lost. Consequently, the cumulative death toll over the past 23 days has surged to a distressing 560 individuals. The gravity of the situation was further underscored when Dhaka Medical College Hospital received ten bodies from recent clashes on Monday, a somber procession that included six valiant police officers and an Ansar member.

Tragedy struck again on Tuesday as six lives were cut short during a botched prison break at Kashimpur High Security Prison in Gazipur, where fleeing inmates met a fatal end at the hands of vigilant guards. The following day, three more souls met their demise while under medical care in Savar, Dhaka. In a separate incident in Gagnibari, Meherpur district, one individual lost their life and seven others sustained injuries during a brutal home invasion and subsequent skirmish on Tuesday night. The fallen, identified as Naharul Islam, had ties to the BNP faction.

Adding to the somber narrative, a fatal clash erupted between supporters of the Awami League and BNP in Bhairab, Kishoreganj district on Wednesday, claiming yet another life. The clash was a stark manifestation of the escalating tensions between the factions, pitting Awami League Executive Committee member Shefayet Ullah against former BNP Vice President Tofazzal Hossain in a confrontation that ended in tragedy.
