MCI new policy: Doctors can reject treatment for people who are abusive or aggressive

Voice 9, New Delhi Bureau: The National Medical Commission Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP) (Professional Conduct) Regulations, 2023 official notification stated that doctors can now refuse to treat abusive, unruly, and violent patients or relatives, which is a significant step toward reducing the ongoing instances of violence against doctors.

The Medical Council of India's (MCI) 2002 Code of Medical Ethics will be replaced by these new rules. Doctors now have the legal authority to deny treatment to disorderly and aggressive patients for the first time. The action aims to prevent violence against medical professionals.

Except in the event of a life-threatening emergency, RMP is free to choose whom he will serve. After accepting a case, the RMP shall not leave the patient or leave the case without providing the patient and his family enough notice.

Doctors are not permitted to accept gifts, travel opportunities, or other benefits from pharmaceutical corporations, as stated in the notification's section on their responsibilities to the general public and associated healthcare professionals.

The notification for the right to reimbursement of RMP states that the patient shall be informed of the consultation fees prior to any examination or treatment.

The patient should be given a fair estimate of the cost of the procedure or therapy in order to make an educated choice. If the payments, as stated, are not paid, RMP may refuse to treat or continue to treat a patient.
