Voice 9, News Desk: According
to a recent report by IANS, WhatsApp has announced that it has taken strict
action against over 71 lakh suspicious accounts in India during November 2023,
in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021. In fact, the company proactively
banned 19,54,000 accounts even before receiving any user reports.
This demonstrates WhatsApp's
commitment to user safety and its efforts to maintain a secure platform. As the
most widely used messaging platform in India, with a user base of over 500
million, WhatsApp received 8,841 complaint reports in November. The term
"accounts actioned" refers to the measures taken by WhatsApp based on
these reports, which could involve either banning an account or reinstating a
previously banned account.
WhatsApp's user-safety report
not only provides insights into the user complaints received but also
highlights the actions taken by the platform. Additionally, it outlines the
preventive measures implemented by WhatsApp to address abuse on its platform.
To further address concerns raised by Indian social media users, the Grievance
Appellate Committee (GAC) was introduced by the government. This committee will
handle appeals from users contesting decisions made by social media platforms.
WhatsApp remains committed to
preventing and combating abuse on its platform. It has a dedicated team of
professionals, including engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and
experts in law enforcement, online safety, and technology development, who work
tirelessly to oversee and strengthen these efforts.
In related news, there will be
a significant change for WhatsApp users on Android this year. They will no
longer be able to backup their chats for free on Google Drive. This marks a
departure from the convenience that Google has provided in the past, allowing
users to backup their WhatsApp conversations without using their 15GB of free
data allowance.
