The authorities investigated Cheskidov's one-story residence in Smolino village and discovered a collection of sex toys, muzzles, and pornographic CDs. The local section of Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed the discovery of human remains in Cheskidov's home's basement.
Smolino locals told the media that they seldom saw Cheskidov outside and that his mother told them he was in Moscow or elsewhere. The villagers stated that Valentina was aware of her son's activities and covered for him. According to a source, the mother had no suspicions and assumed 'Yekaterina' was Cheskidov's lover. Valentina, according to some tales, was the one who finally assisted her escape.
According to the investigating authorities, Cheskidov met Ekaterina, then 19, in 2009 and encouraged her to "drink alcohol" at his residence, where he has kept her since. He also suffers from mental illness, and as his condition deteriorated, he was transported to a nearby hospital, giving Ekaterina the opportunity to flee the house.
She informed the detectives that Cheskidov had brought another female prisoner into the residence, whom he killed in 2011 following a disagreement. Ekaterina said he stabbed the victim multiple times before killing her with a nail puller.
